 | 2005 Griffin's Lair Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
Griffin’s Lair Vineyards is located in the Sonoma Coast appellation, a few miles north of San Pablo Bay in the Lakeville area. The vineyard is owned by Joan and Jim Grif¬fin, who live on the property. They believe all great wines start in the vineyard. They practice sustainable farming and are moving towards complete organic methods. To make this truly a team effort, they involve the winemakers who source fruit in every phase of the growing process. Previous vintages of this wine have revealed a wonder¬ful medley of earth cherry and smoked meat on the mid palate. This newly emerg¬ing microclimate in the Petaluma Gap will continue to evolve as a premier growing sight for Pinot Noir. Our 2005 Griffin’s Lair Pinot Noir expresses the characteristic qualities of smoke and leather from this Sonoma Coast site along with bright fruit and savory accents. The smoke and leather on the nose mingle with red fruit and a light layer of dusty earth. The palate starts with mainly raspberry and some cherry, but evolves into deeper, darker fruit tones with hints of olive and meat. All of these elements are well balanced, and the combination of Swan, Pommard, and 115 clones provides layers of complexity. Supple tannins and good acidity give just enough heft to carry the fruit and earth notes through a long finish, without distracting from the prettier qualities in the wine. Ready to drink right now, but with enough structure to stand up to some time in the cellar.
