The illustrious farming career of the Dutton Family dates back to the 1880's when brothers Warren and Reed purchased their first 200 acres in Santa Rosa to grow California prunes. Since that time generations have passed along the tradition of producing the highest quality fruit their lands could make. In 1964 great grandson Warren Jr. bought his first 35 acres west of the town of Graton and started producing apples and pears, in addition to the prunes they were famous for. With the gradual decline of things in the fruit industry, Warren made up his mind there was a place for grape growing in West Sonoma County and in 1967 he sold his first Chardonnay harvest. From those humble beginnings Warren created a wine growing business that in 2003 encompassed more than 1300 acres of owned, leased and managed properties. With the passing of Warren in late 2001, sons Steve and Joe have continued with the tradition started by their father. In addition to the day to day activities of running the farm, Steve has partnered with winemaker Dan Goldfield to produce the Dutton-Goldfield label, and Joe has the Sebastopol Vineyard label. They supply grapes to some of northern Califonia's finest winemakers, including Kistler, Hartford Court, Patz and Hall, Chasseur and Rutz to name a few. Add Roessler Cellars to the list as of 2001. A leased property, Searby Vineyard is located at the southern edge of Green Valley on a bench overlooking the valley below. It gets constant ocean influenced breezes to cool the 35 year old Wente clone Chardonnay grapes. By working with the Duttons to attain the highest quality possible, we are able to harvest the grapes by handpicking the vineyard to yield a complex wine that displays excellent fruit with great balance between fruit and acidity. The Thomas Road Vineyard is the heart and soul of the Roessler Dutton Ranch Pinot Noir. Composed of all Dijon Clone 115, it has been the backbone of our wine the past two years. Our rows are on the lower portion of the vineyard, which gently slopes from northeast to southwest. The past two years these grapes have been our first picked grapes and they display wonderful complexity and structure with which we've added a small amount from one or two other Dutton locations which give us the blend we're so excited about. |
