Described as "Burgundian-crazy", Gary Pisoni was convinced the mountainous site in the Santa Lucia Highlands was the ideal location to grow the Burgundian varietals. Three years and five wells later, he finally hit water and continued to plant small blocks of Pinot Noir on the property acquired by his parents, Jane and Eddie Pisoni in 1981. Today those vines produce the very highly sought after fruit which we were fortunate enough to acquire in 2002. Warm days ripen the fruit, while cool nights and morning fog prolong the growing season to allow for full-flavor development and complexity. While it was a big risk to plant his special vineyard with cuttings placed directly in the soil, as opposed to the now traditional method of grafting to disease resistant root stock, it resulted in a wine characteristic of the Old World Burgundies he'd longed for. We look forward to a few years from now, when we'll be able to judge the real ageability of these outstanding wines. |
